Controlled Unproductivity Can Lead To Increased Productivity!
Controlled Unproductivity Can Lead To Increased Productivity!
Has anyone
questioned why the work time is from 9-5? Well, that stems back to when labour
rights came into the picture. When the rights came into practice, it was understood
that there should be a balance between leisure, work, and sleep. Therefore, the
24-hour day was divided into 3 equals 8-hour segments. To achieve maximum efficiency,
9-5 was chosen to be the optimal period to ensure the highest level of productivity.
However, this division of time has become outdated. Working 8 hours a day is
not suffice and with the advent of social media, people have extended their leisure
time by cutting down on sleep. Countless teenagers claim that they sleep close
to 4-6 hours a day as they spend most of their time on social media platforms
and are bound by midnight texting. Similar is the case with millennials but the
problem is not as abysmal. Netflix, working from home and better transport, as
well as improved human rights, has permitted this to become the Norm. In
addition, those 8-hours also include breaks, lunch, and lavatory breaks. Hence,
the perceived 8-hour work-day is effectively reduced to 6 hours. With both
reduction in work and in sleep, leisure time is effectively boosted to 12-14
hours, which is too much. This reduces productivity as people wait for leisure
and do not concentrate on their work subconsciously.
On the other hand, working like it is crunch time is detrimental to one’s health. Working
for 12+ hours a day with little to no rest and leisure hinders your
productivity. During work, your neurons work hard and if you work 12+ hours,
they will go into overdrive. If this is continued for more than a week, it
reduces your productivity exponentially and in extreme cases, it can cause
death.
Both these
systems are inefficient as you are not at your 100% during your work. The total
work done will not have dotted the Is and crossed the Ts and will lack
professionalism. Taking your time, doing the due diligence, and getting the job
done are at utter importance. To achieve this efficiently, a balance must be
struck between the three components: Sleep, leisure, and work.
As we are
human and tend to overestimate things which do not give pleasure, which in most
cases is work, we must overplay our schedule with work. More than 8-hours is
essential for work as if we say we will do 10 hours of work, it is highly
likely the true work we do is for 8-hours. In addition, it is scientifically
proven that we need to let our mind rest and not be sleep-deprived and complete
REM sleep cycles. To accomplish this, consistent sleep timings paired with 7 hours
of sleep can boost your efficiency and lead to increased productivity during
work timings. In addition, downtime spent on entertainment also boosts this
productivity and will help make you complete work stress-free and on time.
